Nvidia's New AI China Threat

A growing rival in China might challenge the artificial intelligence superiority of Nvidia $NVDA ( ▼ 0.09% )  and its semiconductors.

Details: The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that China-based Huawei Technologies is preparing to test its newest and most powerful AI processor to overtake some of Nvidia’s high-end products. Neither company commented on the report.

Bigger Picture: This report comes amid a growing trade war between the United States and China, which could make it difficult for Nvidia to sell advanced chips in China.

Background: Around 13% of Nvidia’s global sales come from China.

Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: If Huawei produced chips that matched or surpassed Nvidia’s, Chinese firms, especially large cloud and AI companies, would likely adopt domestic alternatives, further eroding Nvidia’s access to this massive market.

  • The emergence of a credible Chinese rival could trigger negative investor sentiment.

  • While Huawei could dominate the Chinese market, it would be difficult for the company to displace Nvidia in the U.S due to geopolitical barriers.

Final Thoughts: Nvidia’s stock is down 19.74% this year.
