Applied Materials' Export Woes
Applied Materials $AMAT ( ▲ 2.69% ) fell 2.81% in after-hours trading on Thursday after disclosing that a new U.S. export restriction to China will be costly.
Details: The company stated that it anticipates that the new restriction will reduce its revenue by $110 million in the current quarter. For the next full year, the company expects that the new rule will cut its revenue by $600 million.
Background: The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security issued the new export rule on September 29.
Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: The newly announced export restrictions are likely to hurt Applied Materials more than some of its rivals, primarily because of how exposed the company is to the Chinese semiconductor market and the specifics of its business model.
Approximately 31% of Applied Materials' revenue in early 2025 came from the China region.
Other competitors are also affected, but none are as directly exposed to China in terms of revenue share as Applied Materials.
U.S. export controls are also part of a broader strategy to localize chip production.
Final Thoughts: It’s been a good year for Applied Materials. The stock is up 36%.
