Rivian Spoils Its Own News ๐
Rivian Automotive $RIVN ( โฒ 8.11% ) fell 9.3% in after-hours trading on Monday, as revenue growth was overshadowed by a share dilution concern.
Financials: Rivian now expects revenue to be between $1.55 billion and $1.65 billion in the second quarter, up from $1.30 billion last year. The company attributed the growth to lower average selling prices.
Details: The problem with Rivian was that the company also announced a new public offering of 75 million shares of common stock, with the proceeds being used for general corporate purposes.
Powering the Story: Investors are concerned that the additional share offering is a dilution event.
Early Birdโs Nest Egg Gains: The 75 million-share offering is a near-term supply overhang, so the stock reaction makes sense; but it does not automatically change Rivianโs longer-term operating outlook.
The offering itself does not imply a new deterioration in demand or a broken product story.
Final Thoughts: Rivianโs stock was up just 3.76% this year before Mondayโs announcement.

AbbVie's Unexpected Hit
AbbVieโs $ABBV ( โผ 2.42% ) positive momentum took a little hit when the pharmaceutical company updated its fiscal outlook on Monday after a good run in June.
Financials: The company now said in its upcoming results that it expects to include pre-tax acquired in-process research and development and milestone expenses of $291 million, which will cause earnings to fall by 17 cents per share.
Powering the Story: The $291 million was likely triggered by AbbVieโs June 2026 license acquisition activity. For example, in the previous quarter, the company had a $650 million upfront payment involving a previous acquisition. In the same way, this new charge was not an operating expense from sales or manufacturing; it was a deal-related upfront payment tied to a biotech licensing transaction.
Final Thoughts: The stock had been up 19% since early June. AbbVie reports earnings on July 31.

Crinetics Pharmaceuticals $CRNX ( โผ 0.47% ) surged 99.88% (wow!) in after-hours trading on Monday after Vertex Pharmaceuticals $VRTX ( โฒ 0.29% ) announced plans to acquire it for $10 billion.
Final Thoughts: Vertex fell 2% in after-hours trading, although the stock is up 17% this year.
