Oracle's $40B AI Gamble 🧠

Oracle $ORCL ( ▼ 2.21% ) reported good financial results on Wednesday, but the company’s plan to borrow more money was poorly received, causing the stock to plunge 10.12% in after-hours trading.

Financials: Oracle reported earnings of $2.11 per share in the past quarter and revenue of $19.2 billion. Both were better than expected.

Details: The company’s Remaining Performance Obligations grew $85 billion to a record $638 billion.

Powering the Story: Oracle also announced on Wednesday that the company needs to raise $40 billion through a combination of debt and equity financing (including a previously announced $20 billion at-the-market equity issuance) to pay for its AI cloud ambitions.

Background: The company raised $43 billion in debt financing and $5 billion in equity financing in the previous year to fund AI plans. All the spending has weighed on the stock, which was only up 2% this year before these results.

Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Oracle is raising a lot of capital for an AI buildout that may not generate cash fast enough, so investors are worried about dilution, heavier leverage, and weak free cash flow if the returns take longer than expected.

Final Thoughts: The day before Oracle’s results, Super Micro Computer $SMCI ( ▼ 27.98% ) also said it needs to raise funds to meet customer AI demands.
