Amazon vs Costco, Walmart 🛒

Amazon $AMZN ( â–² 0.48% ) ticked up 0.48% on Wednesday after introducing a private-label food brand, challenging both Costco $COST ( â–¼ 0.9% ) and Walmart $WMT ( â–¼ 1.07% ) in the process.

Details: Called Amazon Grocery, the new brand features over 1,000 high-quality food items. Most products are priced under $5 to provide value for customers.

Powering the Story: The launch of Amazon’s private-label food brand on Wednesday allows the technology giant to tap into the growing market of consumers looking for more affordable grocery options. It also means that Amazon Grocery is a direct competitor to Costco's Kirkland Signature and Walmart's Great Value.

Stock Price: Costco fell 0.90% on Wednesday. Walmart dropped 1.06%.

Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Amazon’s new private-label food brand is a major, direct challenge to both Costco and Walmart. Both competitors should be concerned about potential impacts, but the threat level differs for each.

  • Costco is more vulnerable in the near term due to overlap in value shoppers.

  • Walmart must adapt quickly to retain share against Amazon’s aggressive, convenient, value-oriented grocery presence.

  • Both Costco and Walmart also have advantages, including bulk savings and customer loyalty.

Final Thoughts: Walmart’s stock is up 13% this year. Costco is up less than 1% in 2025, and Amazon’s stock is flat.
