Mobileye's Humanoid Robot Buy
Shares of the autonomous driving company Mobileye $MBLY ( ▼ 4.58% ) surged 11.25% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after acquiring a humanoid robotics maker.
Details: Mobileye is buying Mentee Robotics for $900 million, including $612 million in cash.
Background: The acquisition comes as Mobileye has struggled in the past year. Shares are down 44% in the last 12 months. The company has reportedly faced some layoffs as demand for its self-driving technology decreases.
Quote: “By combining Mentee’s breakthroughs in humanoid robotics with Mobileye’s expertise in automotive autonomy, and its proven ability to productize advanced AI, we have a unique opportunity to lead the evolution of physical AI across robotics and autonomous vehicles on a global scale.” - CEO Amnon Shashua.
Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Mobileye’s acquisition of Mentee Robotics is viewed positively because it extends Mobileye from “just” automotive ADAS/AV into the broader Physical AI / humanoid robotics opportunity, while reusing much of its existing tech stack and adding scarce AI-robotics talent.
Both autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots rely on the same foundational capabilities.
This alignment reduces strategic friction and makes it more likely that the combined company can move quickly to productize Physical AI across both automotive and humanoid robots, which is what the market is betting on with a favorable view of the deal.
Final Thoughts: At the end of 2025, shares of Mobileye fell to their lowest level since going public in 2022.
