United Airlines' Newark Trouble

United Airlines $UAL ( ▲ 2.42% ) posted mixed financial earnings results on Wednesday, sending the stock down 2.00% in after-hours trading.

Financials: United Airlines reported earnings of $3.87 per share in the past quarter, which was better than expected. But the reported revenue of $15.2 billion was lower than expected.

Details: Premium cabin revenue jumped 5.6%, but overall domestic revenue dropped 7%.

Powering the Story: The numerous delays and cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport in the spring caused operational constraints during the quarter.

Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Newark is essential to United’s revenue because it functions as a high-volume gateway to critical domestic and international markets, anchors the airline’s East Coast operations, and supports the majority of its premium and business travel revenue out of the New York metropolitan area.

Final Thoughts: Shares of United Airlines are down more than 7% this year.
