Nike Jumps After Surprise "Wins"
Most expected Nike $NKE ( ▲ 0.26% ) to post a revenue decline, but instead the company posted an increase on Tuesday in its financial earnings results, sending shares up 4.48% in after-hours trading.
Financials: Nike reported earnings of 49 cents per share and revenue of $11.7 billion in the past quarter. Both were better than expected.
Powering the Story: Revenues increased 1%, which is good considering the company was expected to lose money in the quarter. What drove the good results? Revenue in the wholesale business grew 7% and sales in North America were up 4%.
Yes, But: The gross margin declined by 42.2% due in part to higher tariffs. Meanwhile, the direct-to-consumer business saw revenue drop 4%. Revenue in China fell once again, this time by 10%.
Quote: “While we’re getting wins under our belt, we still have work ahead to get all sports, geographies, and channels on a similar path as we manage a dynamic operating environment.” - CEO Elliott Hill.
Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Nike’s comeback is underway, showing early signs of progress, but the company still faces several big tasks to secure a true rebound for long-term dominance.
Nike is trying to win in innovation. The company is focusing on technical, performance-driven products in running and basketball.
Nike must adapt its product mix and marketing to local preferences in China.
The company needs sharper digital execution and data-driven personalization to revive its struggling direct-to-consumer business.
Final Thoughts: Nike’s stock, down 5% this year, is trying to turn things around.
