Humana, Insurance Stocks Plunge
Humana $HUM ( ▼ 20.78% ) plunged 12.38% in after-hours trading on Monday after a report suggested that Medicare rate increases will be significantly lower than anticipated.
Details: The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that payments for Medicare Advantage insurers will increase by only about 0.09% on average next year.
The report also caused CVS Health $CVS ( ▼ 13.69% ) and UnitedHealth Group $UNH ( ▼ 20.17% ) to decline 9.15% and 8.65% in after-hours trading, respectively.
Early Bird’s Nest Egg Gains: Lower-than-expected Medicare Advantage rates are a problem because they are the core profit engine for the big managed care names, and CMS is effectively compressing the revenue per member in a business where medical cost trend is running well ahead of that funding.
Final Thoughts: UnitedHealth reports earnings today. Humana and CVS report earnings in a few weeks.
